1969 graduates honored during Homecoming: Kathy Matt, Sandy Ball, Charles and Laurel Summers, Lee Walker. Congratulations on 50 years living out the motto "...Because Life is for Service."
The 2019 recipient of the Diakonos Award is Joy Potter.
The Diakonos Award is named for the Greek word “Diakonos,” translated in the New Testament as “servant,” “minister” or “deacon.” This award is given to dedicated and faithful graduates who faithfully serve Christ and demonstrate commendable Christian testimony in their family and work.
Karen Meadows received the 2019 Honorary Alumnus Award during this year's Homecoming. Karen has faithfully served as a cook since October 1996. The first to open the kitchen at 5:30 each morning, Karen is known for her sweet spirit and dependability.
The Honorary Alumnus award is presented to loyal friends of Appalachian Bible College who, while not alumni, demonstrate the heart of an alumnus through faithful support and participation in the mission of the College.
The 2019 Servant of the Year is Dr. Joel Pinter.
Nearly all of Dr. Pinter’s life has been interwoven with Appalachian Bible College. He first arrived on campus in August 1958 when his parents joined the missionary team of Appalachian Bible Fellowship. Over the past 25 years, he has served the mission of ABC in numerous roles, always with impeccable faithfulness and conscientious excellence. He also has a consistent reputation for personal evangelism and a commitment to prayer.
The Servant of the Year Award is presented by the Alumni Association to current or former staff members whose testimony in ministry exemplifies the Appalachian Bible College distinctive of servanthood.
The 2019 Alumni of the Year are Tim and Beth Pauley.
Tim and Beth started dating while students at ABC in the mid-80’s. Tim joined the college staff after graduation in 1985. He worked in Development and became the Director of Outside Adventures. Beth graduated a year later in 1986 and joined the staff as the president’s secretary. She also served as the Alpine secretary and as the Dean of Women.
They were married in 1987, and God has since blessed them with two children and three grandchildren. After ministry with Appalachian Bible College, and throughout their 30+ years of marriage, Tim and Beth have dedicated themselves to God’s call to serve Christ.
Tim is now on the staff at Spring Hill Baptist Church in South Charleston, WV. He also does pulpit supply and has been a blessing to several area churches. Beth serves faithfully in their church as pianist, Awana secretary, ladies' Sunday School teacher, and a helper in the youth group.
Outside their local church Beth is on staff with Child Evangelism Fellowship and leads a Good News Club in South Charleston.
Tim’s other main ministry is as a missionary with Capitol Commission through which he ministers to West Virginia’s political leaders. He leads Bible studies with legislators and government workers at the capitol, and is a bright and encouraging light for the gospel of Christ. One of Tim’s longtime friends describes him this way: "In the storms that brew at the capitol, Tim is a constant steady light and because of his Gospel ministry has the respect of almost every legislator. He has a fire for the Lord and a dogged persistence to keep the focus of his ministry on the Gospel. The capitol would be empty without Tim’s presence and influence for Christ."
The Pauleys' pastor believes that the characteristic they best demonstrate is servanthood. He states, "If I could describe them in one word, it would be 'servant.' They are willing to do anything that is asked of them. They pretty much embody the principles that Appalachian Bible College teaches."
As thousands gather for Bridge Day, pray for ABC students who are jumping into ministry, sharing the gospel with both children and adults.
Student committees have been praying and preparing for Missions Conference since the spring, and now it's almost here. You are invited to join in the conference, October 28-30. A children's conference and nursery will be provided during the evening sessions, 7:00 on Monday and Tuesday. Morning sessions will begin at 9:00 Monday and 8:30 Tuesday/ Wednesday in Anderson Hall. Additionally, prospective students can come for Missions Preview: abc.edu/experience.
